State Secretary for Health Sergio Cortes attends Situation Xerem

Health Secretary of State Sergio Cortes visited Xerem, Duque de Caxias on Sunday morning. His visit also entailed surveying of some of the most affected areas by the floods that were experienced in the week as well as the main shelters that are receiving the municipal population. The Government is involved in the running of the Dengue Hydration Center at Xerem health center since the 15th. The center is equipped with 12 chairs to be used for hydration and together they have the capacity to be able to serve 300 people daily.

Sergio Cortes stated on niteroi.gov that the State Government is taking adequate steps that rely on the worst but it hopes for the best. He added that the center was just a preventive measure by the State Department in charge of Health in an effort to offer the municipality support. This is due to the amount of garbage that has accumulated in the city thereby increasing the possibilities of the proliferation of the dengue mosquito.

The Municipal secretary of health, Camillo Junquiera, attended a meeting with the Atanews coordinator in charge of National Health Force Conception Mendonca and agreed on a number of things. The meeting resolved to have the state government deliver a second calamity kit Caxias in addition to the other one that had been previously delivered. In addition to the calamity kit, 3000 antibiotic tablets necessary for intervening early against leptospirosis will be provided.

All these measures by the State department of Health (SES) have been taken throughout the region with the help of Epidemiological Surveillance teams from Thursday last week. They are all aimed at the prevention against the proliferation of the diseases that their contagion is throuh contaminated water like hepatitis A, leptospirosis and diarrhea. Other diseases caused by clusters of people like meningitis and chicken pox are also prevented. The same case will apply to those that occur after rainfall like the dengue.

Samples that were collected among the first batch in seven Xerem shelters courtesy of the Health Surveillance Secretariat of State were considered unsatisfactory by Lacen (Central Laboratory Noel Nutels). This has promoted the teams to work hard at disinfection of water daily. This is the exact recommendation that the health Department has asked everyone to do. The Government has provided 10,000 bottles of sodium hypochlorite to people in Caxias. Cortes stressed on the importance of also using bottled water for food hygiene and drinking.
